Credits, Transfers, and Transcripts

Credits from our technical courses are transferable to other Colorado public community colleges, so starting your education at Emily Griffith Opportunity School can be the easiest and most cost-effective way to start earning your Associate’s Degree.

Credit Transfer

There is now an easy way for Opportunity School students to earn an AAS degree! Students may apply credit from approved Opportunity School career/technical courses toward an Associates Degree in Applied Technology. The credit transfers to any of the Colorado public community/junior colleges including the six metro area community colleges - Aims, Arapahoe, Front Range, Red Rocks, Aurora, and Denver. Up to 42 semester credits of a state approved EGOS career/technical program may be credited to the community college’s AAS Degree in Applied Technology. To complete an AAS degree, the student must complete at least 15-18 hours of academic courses at the community college. For more information, talk to an Opportunity School advisor.

Students may transfer credit(s) from other college(s) to Emily Griffith Opportunity School by requesting an official transcript from previous college(s). EGOS will accept transfer credit from postsecondary institutions that are accredited by one of the six regional accrediting associations: North Central Association, Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, New England Association of Schools and Colleges, Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities, Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, and Western Association of Schools and Colleges. Transfer credits may also be accepted from Community Colleges of Colorado-approved institutions for credits that are applicable to a certificate program and meet the certificate requirements in comparable or equivalent EGOS program(s). Credits must be earned in the previous five to ten calendar years. (See program manager for special circumstances.) One-third of the credit hours in a program need to be completed at Emily Griffith Opportunity School.

In order to transfer credit to Emily Griffith, students must:

  • Request official transcript(s) from previous school(s). Transcripts from international institutions must be submitted in the native language along with certified English translations.
  • Issuing institutions should address transcripts to EGOS Student Records, 1250 Welton Street, Denver, CO 80204. Documents become the property of the school and will not be released to the student or transferred to other institutions.
  • Complete Transfer of Credit application form.
  • Before entering class or program, meet with appropriate department advisor who will evaluate transcript(s) to determine how accepted transfer credits will apply to intended program. Evaluation of transcript(s) may take up to two weeks.
  • Register for class(es) that is/are different from the ones that you would like to be evaluated.
  • EGOS reserves the right to evaluate all credits according to its admissions and registration policies.

Credit by Examination

Students may receive Credit by Examination by taking a comprehensive examination that demonstrates competence equivalent to learning achieved in a course offered by a college. See department advisor for list of classes. Once a student enters a class, he/she may not take a challenge test for that class. Students may take an exam only one time for each course.

In order to take a challenge examination for prerequisite classes for any program, students must:

  • Meet with department advisor
  • Complete request for examination application form
  • Request from advisor a time to test that fits with department scheduling
  • Pay $15 to take challenge test for prerequisite class(es)
  • Take test – grade is either pass or fail. A pass does not factor into GPA.
  • Receive test score from department advisor
  • Prerequisite classes are not placed on student transcript
  • Challenge examinations from other schools are not accepted
  • If a student does not pass test, he/she must take course at full cost. No amount of money from the test-out will apply to actually taking the class.

In order to take a challenge examination for program classes (not prerequisite classes) students must:

  • Enroll in other classes before testing out of a class
  • Meet with department advisor
  • Complete request for examination application form
  • Request from advisor a time to test that fits with department scheduling
  • Pay for cost of class in Treasurer’s Office. Cost is calculated at 50% of the cost per credit hour multiplied by the number of credits in the class. If students do not pass the challenge test, they must take course at full cost. No amount of money from the test-out will apply to actually taking the class.
  • Take test – grade is either pass or fail. A pass does not factor into GPA.

See student records for pass/fail to be put on transcript. Challenge examinations from other schools are not accepted.
